Editorial Review for Aix--CLOSED – by Kathleen Squires

In Short
The tablecloths might have vanished in the large, bi-level space, but the Provencal blue and gold trimmings still set a Gallic tone, with capable chef Didier Virot remaining at the helm. Added variety now allows Upper West Siders to eat as fancy as they feel, whether their appetites crave gourmet sandwiches, straightforward pastas, simply grilled meats or more creative fare like duck confit turnovers with caramelized onion, dried cherries and mushrooms.

Insider Tips

When to Go

A $25 prix fixe brunch includes a bloody mary or champagne cocktail, main course, and dessert; or diners can choose from the regular a la carte menu.

What to Drink

Though the vast wine menu is tempting, the restaurant also serves creative cocktails, like pineapple mojitos and blackberry crush martinis.

This is the first review I've ever written, but this place was so bad I had to warn others. I just came home from New Years dinner. They lie on their website and say there is a price fix for $70 but when you get there it's a $125 tasting menu. Who wants 7 terrible courses. The menu sounds great but is borderline disgusting. How can you even make mashed potatoes taste like chemicals. I actually asked themt to stop serving us bc I didn't want to have to "taste" anymore. Our waiter looked severely depressed. How do places like this stay in business. Bad service & expensive bad wine. This is not the Mandarin Oriental. Cost $400 for 2.

Pros: nothing

Cons: everything

From the first refreshing sip of a minted pear cocktail to the last sinful bite of the chocolate palet, everything was just divine. The asparagus salad was light, but flavorful, and the parmesan-crusted daurade with layered zucchini and basil was out of this world. And the chocolate palet? Well, it would be indecent to describe in a public forum.
