Editorial Review for Blue Owl – by Katie Heffernan
In Short
A staircase descent delivers neighborhood night owls into a golden-lit, cave-like cocktail den. Amber spotlights flare against rough stone walls and reflect upon the low bronzed ceilings and copper-plated bar for a sexy, Old World aura. During weekends, the well-dressed clientele might slosh around specialty martinis while eking out elbowroom or positioning for the pick-up, but on weekdays can hold civil conversation on embellished pressed-tin banquets and cushy suede chairs configured for intimate chats.

I see this place ranks pretty high on this site. Im not surprised. I went to the Blue Owl for the first time last week. I had never heard of it before but saw people milling around outside its entrance so my girlfriend and I decided it was just as good a spot as any to go in to for a drink. the bartender was quick to come over to us and point out the cocktail list. After chatting with us for about five minutes, he recommended two drinks off the menu. We agreed and eagerly awaited our drinks. They were really spectacular. But more than anything the bartender was very pleasant. He was friendly but never over the top. He genuinely wanted my girlfriend and me to enjoy our drinks and our time at his bar. he made a really good impression on me. I would go back to Blue Owl for the drinks - they were terrific. But I would also go back because of the service.

I have become a bit of a brooklyn hermit these days so when i do brave the other side of the river and toil on the isle of manhattan, i like my endeavor to be worth my venturing out of my neighborhood, and my comfort zone. and so this weekend, when forced by the obligation of a friend's birthday plans to cab it over the bridge for a night of manhattan madness, I was less than thrilled, and, well, admittedly skeptical. But thank god my friend has excellent taste. He booked the Blue Owl, and it turned out to be a great call. the bar was such a refreshing change from the yawn-worthy places I generally get dragged to, filled with superficial snobs who boastfully order the venues most expensive drink just so others will see that he or she has ordered the bar's most expensive drink. the blue owl was not like that. it was so genuine. the drinks were delicious and the crowd was, well, cool. the manager introduced himself upon arrival. I liked that. I liked that personal touch. our server was charming and sweet. she battled the thick crowd of people to make sure we were never neglected, and was happy to open as many tabs as we wanted. she was so accomodating, which is another characteristic manhattan bars seem to lack these days. the modern interior lent itself nicely to the top-shelf drinks and good looking crowd. I will certainly go back to the Blue Owl. And I recommend it strongly to others out there.
