Editorial Review for 8th Street Wine Cellar – by Rebecca Behan

In Short
Taking cues from the street itself, the bar keeps it casual with the staff's faded tees and a cozy neighborhood ambience, enough to convince even non-wine drinkers to hang out. The accessible, varied wine list holds the biggies close--Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay--but features lesser-known vintners. Drinkers can have the wine and skip the headache courtesy of the kitchen, which pumps out oysters, charcuterie, bruschette and standout ahi tuna sliders. After work, martini drinkers dot the cozy, mirror-backed bar, and later, the restaurant shift descends.

Hits: No bottle tops $100 and an ample selection of low to mid-range bottles, by-the-glass choices and half-bottles keep wine connoisseurs on a budget happy.

Misses:
Given nearly 50 choices on the wine menu, the uninitiated may feel a bit overwhelmed if they opt for a table over a seat at the bar.

Fun Fact

In the restroom, check out the advertisement for the Jumble Shop, a Village speakeasy and tea room that claimed 28 W. Eighth Street as its home from the 1930s through the 1960s, when partygoers in the know used it as a back entrance to the club at 3 MacDougal Alley.

Arrived at 9.45pm and got nice table at the back. Our waiter for the evening was a nice relaxed guy. We gave him our taste choices of red wine and he recommended a bottle from a long list. The wine list is a good, strong list of various wines and price range was good for all budgets. Unlike other experiences, our waiter didn’t try to sell the most expensive (very refreshing) but actually offered us a wine he liked and thought we would also. He was spot on. We ordered food: Tuna Sliders, Skewered shrimp, Bacon n Figs followed by a cheese plate. Tuna sliders were tip top. Skewered Shrimp were great and had a little spicy kick which was not overbearing. I liked the Bacon n Figs for its generous cut and strong flavour but the girlfriend wasn’t over keen-if you like good bacon I think you will like it. Cheese plate was good with some nice choices of cuts. Had a peak at what other tables had ordered and I wanted to try the Meat Plate - cuts of meats n sausage and the Pigs in Blankets. Finished off with a bottle of decent beer from the UK that was properly priced. The Check arrived and left happy. Would I go back - yes, and I am next week with friends. Would I recommend it –yes Our waiter, Mike, turned out to be the owner. Nice guy who was interested in points of views about his new establishment. Ps. I didn’t know the owner before we went to this place and have no financial gain or gifts on this review. Please keep Citysearch honest by not allowing owners or affiliates to write reviews of their own establishments. Oh, once last thing-its a full serving bar so all should be happy! So I returned a week later with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday. We had a place at the bar and ordered Tuna Sliders, Chicken Liver Moose, Shrimp Skewers, Pigs in Blankets and the Meat Platter. All was very good - so good we had to ask for 3 more orders of Tuna Sliders! The music's content and volume is perfect. This place is a gem !

Pros: Ambience, Food, Wine List and Service

Cons: Looking and can't find any

This is a great place to seek refuge from the sports pub. You can enjoy friends and conversation while having great wine, beer, cocktails and food at your fingertips. Service is exceptional.

A Village wine bar that thumbs its nose at tradition--and snobs--bringing the drink of the gods back down to earth.  See the full editorial review.
