Editorial Review for Palm – by Paul Adams

The Scene
Caricatures adorn the walls of this famous 1926 steakhouse--two labyrinthine stories of dark wood, faded paint and closely packed tables. Regulars, some of whom have been coming for decades, consist mostly of business diners and families who love the place for its atmosphere and doting waiters.

The Food
This location is the flagship of the international chain. It's the original and ostensibly the only one that still uses dry-aged beef. Steaks, however, can be mealy and low in flavor: rib eye slices too easily and lacks that cut's famed beefiness. The porterhouse, too, is soft and depthless. The restaurant also offers classic Italian dishes, but entrees like bland veal marsala, smothered in unsubtle sauce, fails to impress. The signature Gigi salad, made up of shrimp, bacon, tomato, and onion, is tasty enough, as are other starters, like the spicy, buttery lobster bisque.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

There's a hefty wine list balanced between Italy and California. There is a nice proportion of hearty reds to back up any steak; such as the big Carmenet Dynamita, also available by the glass.

Save Money

The 837 Club is the member-rewards program, offering discounts and rewards for frequent diners at this location and more than two dozen other Palms.

The Extras

If you tell your waiter that it's your first time at the Palm, desserts are on the house.

I finally went to the Palm to see if it could really live up to the reputation that it seems to have on so many new yorkers. AND IT DID 100%! Both my boyfriend and I work in the food and beverage industry..and have worked in various new york restaurants, so we know great food when we see it. and eat it!! he ordered the 28 ounce porterhouse steak..and i swear to god his eyes lit up when the old (and very unattentive) waiter brought it out. i ordered the 2 lb lobster because i knew i wouldnt be able to finish it all, and believe me i couldnt. i even ordered it CLEAN (wich means they deshell the entire lobster for you free of charge) and they warned me it would come out looking like "nothing on my plate" but i was sitll amazed by how much lobster meat was still on my plate! it was absolutley amazing. we had the baked clams as an appetizer, my boyfriend ate every damn clam, only saved me one he sadi ti was so amazing. for sides we got mashed potatoes and creamy spinache...DEFINETLY mouth watering..two sides are ENOUGH for two people, so be ware..because ALL of these proportions are monsterous. i it was a little pricey..not too bad we enjoyed ourselves. my boyfriend calls this a MANS restaurant...he says you can FEEL the testosterone when youwalk in the building. very small and cozy, all male staff, huge propportions, GREAT FOOD. im sad to say though, the ONE and ONLY dissapoinment to both of us was the service. now this doesnt go for the entire waitstaff but it seemed as though if you werent a large group, about to drop hundreds of dollar sthen you were nobody. i noticed my boyfriend and i got TERRIBLE service from the old snobby hag, but the table next to us (5 buisness men) were showered with amazing service by our SAME waitor. it was very rude and VERY noticeable. but we shall return, and very soon, and continue to give this place nothing but good reviews because the overall experience and food was A+.

Pros: Steak, Lobster,FOOD!

Cons: terrible terrible service.
