Editorial Review for Dance Theatre of Harlem Inc – by Tony Phillips
The Background
According to legend, a gypsy cab driver woke DTH co-founder Arthur Mitchell in the middle of the night after spotting a garage for sale on W. 152nd Street. Mitchell raced over and returned with a deed. Now his troupe boasts the most extensive touring schedule in dance. Founded in 1969 as a response to the King assassination, DTH firsts include performing in the Soviet Union, touring South Africa and traveling extensively in China.
The Experience
From an initial enrollment of just 30, DTH's student population has grown exponentially. The varied curriculum--with community, pre-professional and professional tracks--includes African dance, Tai-chi and even Irish step dancing. Thanks to a two-year renovation in 1994, DTH has four rehearsal studios--among them, a cavernous third floor space. Administrative offices and archives detailing the troupe's 32-year history are housed under the same roof, appropriately punctuated by the sculpture of a dancer leaping along the roofline.
